2009 Village Halloween Parade

Halloween Parade 101

New York City's Village Halloween Parade is the nation's largest public Halloween celebration and has been a New York institution for 36 years. It's crazy, crowded, and chaotic. And it's one of those things you just have to experience live at least once.

The parade is even listed in the book, 100 Things to Do Before You Die: Travel Events You Just Can't Miss.

Participate in the 2009 Village Halloween Parade

The parade will march from Spring Street to 21st Street along 6th Avenue, starting at 7PM on October 31st.

For Participants: Line-up for participants begins on 6th Avenue between Spring and Broome Streets at 6PM. It can take anywhere from two to four hours to enter the parade route, so the staging area becomes its own party. If you don't have a costume, you can volunteer to carry a puppet in the parade.

For Spectators: You'll have to get there early if you want a good view. Hours before the event, onlookers start to line the sidewalks behind police barricades. Some eager spectators climb up on trees, fences, and phone booths for a better view (at least until the NYPD officers shoo them down).

Tips for Enjoying the Village Halloween Parade

The streets intersecting the route are closed off at 5PM. After 5PM, those wishing to enter the parade will be directed by police to Spring Street.

At the Village Halloween Parade, it's often hard to know who's a participant and who's a spectator. Many spectators come in costume and many of the marchers play to the crowd by throwing candy, posing for photos, and interacting with their public.

The Parade usually lasts from 7PM to 10PM. It will be telecast live on NY1 for those who prefer to avoid the crowds and the craziness. And when the parade is over, Halloween night has just begun. Most revelers head to parties at area bars, clubs and restaurants.

Getting There

Take the 1, 2, and 3 lines to 14th St. and 7th Ave.

Take the A, B, C, D, E, F and Q lines to West 4th St. and 6th Ave.
